Panama Papers Revisited: One Year Later
Stéphane de Navacelle intervenes at ABA Section of International Law Spring Meeting in Washington DC in a panel alongside Kim B. Nemirow (Ropes & Gray LLP, Chicago), Shurti Shah (Transparency International USA) and Will Fitzgibbon (International Consortium of Investigative Journalists). This panel reviewed the immediate and ongoing impact of the largest disclosure in history of documentary evidence that reveals global corruption in the use of offshore companies, entities, and accounts. The panel also discussed the ongoing investigations that have been triggered by the public disclosure in April 2016 of the Panama Papers, including the DOJ’s investigation of the law firm Mossack Fonseca; a federal suit in Nevada by hedge fund NML Capital; the investigations in Africa of widespread use of offshore accounts to siphon and conceal funds; and aspects of the disclosure that has shed light on the FIFA scandal involving the international soccer federation.
