Press review – Week of 12 June 2023

This week's press review covers a new proposed legislation that would allow law enforcement officers to activate at distance microphones and cameras on connected devices. Furthermore, the cryptoasset platform Binance, already targeted by the SEC in the United States, is the subject of a preliminary investigation in France, and JPMorgan agreed to settle a class action lawsuit for ignoring warnings about its client Jeffrey Epstein’s illegal activities. Former president Nicolas Sarkozy was questioned by police investigators for allegations of witness tampering. Finally, further house searches have taken place in the case concerning the management of the so-called “Marianne Fund”.

 

A proposed bill on the remote activation of microphones and cameras on connected devices for certain investigations adopted by the Senate

Lawyers, associations, and the parliamentary opposition parties criticize the proposed bill, which allows law enforcement to activate at-distance cameras and microphones on connected devices (i.e., telephones and computers). The Senate approved the proposed bill, which also provides for the extension of night-time searches for certain serious offenses. > Read article

The US bank JPMorgan agreed to pay 290 million dollars to settle part of a class action lawsuit for ignoring internal warnings about Jeffrey Epstein’s illegal activities. > Read article

Marianne Fund: searches at the homes of journalist Mohamed Sifaoui and prefect Christian Gravel

Investigators searched the homes of the head of the organization that managed the Marianne Fund and the head of the leading association that benefited from it as part of the investigation into misappropriation of public funds, breach of trust, and illegal taking of interests. The allocation of these funds, intended to finance the fight against separatism, was contested and is subject to judicial and parliamentary inquiries. > Read article
